The SME Series V tone arm or pick-up arm is regarded as a modern day classic having been in production since 1986. In all this time it has only undergone a few small but admitedly significant changes which have improved both build and sound quality.

SME SERIES V
On its introduction it was seen as a revelation, no other tonearm manufacturer had used magnesium in the form of a one piece pressure die casting for its main tone arm tube before and only a highly successful company like SME could afford the very considerable investment involved. This investment in magnesium has paid off handsomely for SME as it is now used in the construction of the majority of their tonearms.
The list of Series V models is huge and we have separate pages for the Series V-12, SV GPD and Series V Gold Plated versions. Add to them the detachable headshell version (also available as GPD) and also the Silver (bright chrome) special order versions with either detachable or non-detachable magnesium headshell.
The heart of all of the Series V`s in the range is obviously the unique one piece magnesium pressure die casting that is used as the main tone arm tubing. Light in weight, incredibly strong almost impossible to bend or break and when lined with a special lining extremely inert so adding no character of its own.
A great deal of thought has also gone into the vertical and horizontal bearing assembly with ultra high quality 10mm and 17mm ABEC7 radial shielded bearings with ultra low friction levels and they are adjusted to micron tolerances to avoid extraneous movement. Unwanted movement would allow the tonearm to act in an undesirable manner with the resulting audible loss of information, poor dynamic range and transient attack.
A sensible effective mass of 10/11g allows a wide range of cartridge use in the 4.2 to 18g weight range.
Internal wiring is a good quality Silver with the top of the range pure Silver Litz wire being a useful upgrade at a reasonable price. The audio lead is 1.2m long and whilst some might question its sound quality it does help keep the original purchase price down and is easily replaced at anytime. We have two options available, they combined with the upgraded internal wiring is very advantageous.
The many Series V models are all made to order and are the ideal partner for one of the company`s turntables with that special synergy that is so important in high end audio.
The RRP of the Series V is £1,992.96 or £2,391.55 with VAT.
The RRP of the Series V detachable is £2,124.05 or £2,548.86 with VAT.
